Lynch

Obituary

Ms. Betty Lee Mullins Torbett, age 93, of Lynch, Kentucky, stepped into eternity on Sunday, November 20, 2022 after a brief stay at the Tri-Cities Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  Betty was born on September 23, 1929, in a coal camp in Dorchester, Virginia, to Grover and Eura Blanton Mullins.  While in high school, Betty would travel to Lynch to visit with her aunt and uncle. It was during one of those visits to Lynch where Betty met the boy who lived across the street, Emory Howard (E.H) Torbett. She would graduate from Norton High School in 1948 and that same year, she and E.H. were married. They married in a double wedding ceremony alongside Betty's aunt and uncle in a lovely garden ceremony.  Betty took a variety of courses at the local college but once she had her daughter, Beverly, she became a full-time stay-at-home-mother. E.H. worked for the U.S. Steel Corp as a mining superintendent, which afforded the family the opportunity to travel, which they truly enjoyed doing.

In 1989, Betty's mother and her daughter, Beverly, were both in the hospital battling cancer. Both would pass away within a few months of each other.  Shortly after Beverly's death, Betty and E.H. began raising their youngest granddaughter, Megan, who was barely three years old. Raising Megan gave Betty the strength and determination to continue on. She enjoyed her granddaughters, lavished them with love, time, travel, and gifts, and did the same when her great-grandchildren came along.

Betty was a Kentucky Colonel and a huge KY basketball fan. She loved to read and work in her flower beds. She enjoyed doing anything crafty: making wreaths, decorating, arranging flowers. E.H. would often make wood working items and she and Beverly would decorate whatever he made. Betty had the 'gift of gab' and was a great conversationalist, was easy to talk with, and thoroughly enjoyed being with her family and friends.  This precious soul will be missed by many.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband, E.H. Torbett; her daughter, Beverly Torbett Hall; her parents, Grover and Eura Mullins; a brother, Bobby R. Mullins; and two stillborn siblings.

Left to cherish her memory are her granddaughters: Amanda Isom and husband, John, of Cumberland, and Megan Saylor and husband, Derrick, of Lynch; a sister, Norma Jean Early of Cincinnati, OH; six great-grandchildren: Brycen Saylor, Brody Saylor, Austin Rutherford, Marissa Rutherford, Khalei Rutherford, Whitney McBee; four great-great-grandchildren: Draylee Gist, Carson, Kenzie, and Klaridi McBee; as well as a host of other relatives and many dear friends.

Visitation for Ms. Betty will be held Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at the Tri City Funeral home from 11:00AM-1:00PM with funeral services beginning at 1:00.  Pastor Diana Cornett will be officiating. Burial will follow at the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens in Big Stone Gap, VA.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ms. Betty's memory may be mailed to the Benham United Methodist Church, 104 Frazier Street, Cumberland, KY 40823.
