Obituary

David Wynn, a beloved resident of Abingdon, Virginia, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2025, at the age of 58 at Green Acres Assisted Living.

Born in Harlan County, Kentucky on July 25, 1966, to Nora Beach (Greg) and later adopted by his grandparents, Alonia "Loni" and Granville Wynn, David lived a life marked by kindness and a gentle spirit.

He was preceded in death by his birth mother, Nora Beach (Greg); his adoptive parents, Alonia "Loni" and Granville Wynn; his sisters, Mildred Brandenburg (Bill), Ollie Bates (Bobby), Pernie Lanham (Leroy), Mary Mendez (Pete), and Shirley Roark (Otis); his brothers, Alfred Wynn (Zelma), Vernon Wynn (Carol), and Wilbert Wynn (Roberta); a special friend, Frank Campbell; and his brother-in-law, Harold Mulkey.

David is survived by his sister, Wanda Mulkey, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who cherished him deeply. Among those who held a special place in his life were his sister, Wanda, her children, Jennifer White (Jason), Lynora Campbell, Harold Mulkey, Jr. (Brooke), and his great niece, Autumn Campbell. Among other friends are those he lived with at Green Acres, particularly the employees who dealt with him daily, but especially Barry and Jackie Salewsky, the owners of Green Acres. David loved, Loved, LOVED Barry.

David possessed a unique and special soul. He carried no malice toward anyone, always choosing to see the good in others. His forgiving spirit and selfless nature were evident in his daily interactions. He cared deeply for those he loved and consistently placed their needs before his own.

During David's youth, he loved attending church and youth group at Verda Baptist. He grew very fond of Pastor Danny McCreary, and kept in touch with him over the years.

In David's young adult years, David worked at Joe Bologna's Italian Pizzeria in Lexington, KY, where he was greatly valued and respected by Mr. Bologna. This experience brought him immense satisfaction and remains a cherished memory for his family.

When living in Lexington, David resided at Eastern State. He met a woman named Barbara and was married to her for a short time. It was a happy time in his life, for which we are thankful.

David loved Kentucky basketball - even when they were not winning. He always believed they would "get it together." He would be happy to see that it looks like they are, finally, "getting it together."

There was rarely a day that passed that David didn't make a phone call to each of his family members. He would ask, "What are you doing?" When they would respond and ask, "What have YOU been doing?" David never once failed to respond, "I'm just calling to see what you were doing." Life was never about him, but always about those he loved.

Though schizophrenia presented challenges and restrictions in David's life, it also underscored David's remarkable strength of character. He exemplified the spirit of Matthew 5:39, "turn the other cheek," inspiring all who knew him with his unwavering kind heart, humility, and forgiveness.

To say that David will be profoundly missed by all who knew him is an understatement. The enormity of his love for his circle of family and friends on this earth has left an immense void and sadness. Our only joy is believing that he is in Heaven and fully healed. Our only hope is that we will be reunited with David in Heaven one day. If any of us could ever be even half of the person David was (or even half of the person he thought each of us was), it would be a great accomplishment. We are so thankful to God for the 58 years he gave David, but, oh, what we would give for just one more day.

A graveside service will be held Friday, January 31, 2025, at 2 pm at the Evarts Memorial Gardens with Pastor Danny McCreary officiating.
