Delbert 'Dj'
Jonah Boggs, Sr.
Sep 11, 1945 — Jun 10, 2026
Baxter
Delbert Jonah Boggs, Sr., known to most as DJ, passed away at his home in Baxter, Kentucky, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026. He was 80 years old.
DJ was born on September 11, 1945, in Lynch, Kentucky, to Edward and Laura (Cornett) Boggs. He had four beloved siblings: one sister, Naomi, and three brothers, Jackie, Jim, and Eddie. He grew up in the Hiram community and graduated from Cumberland High School. In 1968, he enlisted in the United States Army, received extensive electronics training, and was assigned to work on nuclear weapons. He served for three years.
After leaving the Army, DJ returned to Harlan County and worked in the U.S. Steel/Arch Minerals coal mines from 1971 to 1997. After Arch closed, he joined CSX Railroad, where he worked as an electrician and electronic maintainer until retiring in 2011. During those years, he also owned and operated Cumberland Valley Electronics. He later earned his CDL and drove a school bus for Harlan County High School for several years.
DJ never met a stranger and loved talking with everyone he met. He spent much of his time tinkering with electronics and enjoyed finding a good deal. He also loved baking and often made candy for his family. Among his favorite pastimes were watching Westerns in the afternoon with his furry companion, Maggie, a Shih Tzu/Yorkie mix. DJ dearly loved his family, especially his two sons, DJ, Jr. and Barney, and his eight grandchildren. He attended Coxton Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Laura Boggs; his son, Delbert Jonah Boggs, Jr.; and his siblings, Naomi, Jackie, Jim, and Eddie.
Those left to cherish DJ's memory include his son, Barney Boggs of Baxter, Kentucky; eight grandchildren, Lexie Boggs, Tanner Boggs, Jace Boggs, Colston Boggs, Baili (Scotty) Bailey, Gage Boggs, Laila Boggs, and Paisli Boggs; one great-granddaughter, Brynlee Bailey; a host of extended relatives; and many friends.
Services for DJ will be held Monday, June 15, 2026, at Tri City Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral at 3:00 p.m. Reverend Craig Garland will officiate. Burial will take place at the Clay-Hall Cemetery at Cloverlick. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
