Dennie L. Whitaker, 67, of Cumberland went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 12, 2023, at the Harlan App. Reg. Hospital after a long battle with kidney failure and black lung. He was born on June 10, 1955 in Benham, KY and had lived in the area all of his life. Dennie, also known as "Haystack", worked as a coal miner for 38 years and was known for his love of restoring classic cars.

Dennie was a member of the Sand Hill Baptist Church in Cumberland for 14 years, where he was also served as deacon. He loved the Lord with all his heart and was always willing to share his testimony. When diagnosed with kidney failure, the doctor said he may live five years on kidney dialysis. However, God had better plans and blessed him with 14 years.

Dennie was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Whitaker and Bertha Cornett Whitaker; four brothers, Harvey, Daniel, Irvin and Ernest; six sisters, Lutrella, Juanita, Faye, Laure, Mary and Geneva.

Dennie leaves behind his loving wife of 18 years, Shannon Doyle Whitaker, Cumberland; his precious children who he loved with all his heart, Shayla Breanne Whitaker and Luke Darrell Whitaker, both of Cumberland; one brother, David Whitaker and wife, Joy, Putney. He also leaves to cherish his memory a host of family and friends and his church family.

The family would like to thank the Fresenius Kidney Care Team for the love and care they showed Dennie through the years.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at the Sand Hill Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. with Pastor Jimmy Jenkins, Brother Rick Raleigh and Brother Donnie Dixon officiating.

Burial will be in the Farley Cemetery in Bledsoe with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Harlan Funeral Home is honored to serve the Whitaker family.
