Doris Ann
Sweatt
Feb 15, 1952 — Dec 5, 2022
Harlan
This is an obituary of a strong woman who loved well and lived an amazingly full life. Ms. Doris Ann Sweatt, seventy years of age, stepped into eternity on Monday, December 5, 2022. Born on February 15, 1952 in Verda, Kentucky to Roscoe Sweatt and Missouri Goodwin Cottrell, Doris was the oldest of nine children. As the oldest, she learned early on to be a caregiver, helping with her eight younger siblings. She graduated from Evarts High School in 1970 and immediately began nursing courses in Pineville, KY. Doris graduated as an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) and put those caregiver qualities to work, first in the office of Dr. Bryson at the Daniel Boone Clinic and later at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Once she moved back to Harlan, Doris began a family. From then on, she devoted her life to raising children and grandchildren.
Doris was a lovely, kind woman who enjoyed raising flowers in her garden, watching court TV, and crafting. She had a heart of gold, was willing to give whatever was needed to whom ever was in need. She never met a stranger, was a wonderful listener, gave great advice, and welcomed everyone in as part of her own family. Doris was a wonderful cook and cooked a mean BBQ. Back in her younger years, she was an amazing softball player and played on a league. Doris was a long-time member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Harlan and was very active in her church. She was gifted with a beautiful voice and would often sing at church or while at home. Above all, Doris loved her family. She was known as Granny or Nana and there wasn't anything she enjoyed more than spending time with her grandbabies. This world is a little less bright without Ms. Doris in it. Her absence leaves an unfillable emptiness in the lives of all who knew and loved her.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe and Missouri; a granddaughter, Shianne Burgan; and her step-father, LJ Cottrell.
Left to cherish her memory is Doris' large family…three children: son, Dr. Tony Sweatt (Felicia), daughter, Ericka Young ( Reggie), son, Shawn Sweatt (Rachel Winn); bonus sons: Dante Cranford and Barry Hicks; nineteen grandchildren: Brittany Stapleton (Paul), Allen Hensley, Dustin Hensley, Kiera Harden, Kirk Brown, Khloe Abner, Kenyon Abner, AD Griffey, Jayda Young, Asia Young, Tristan Burgan, Anthony Sweatt, Jr, Simone Sweatt, Layla Sweatt, Kingston Sweatt, Fionna Sweatt, Prince Sweatt, Roscoe Sweatt; three great-grandchildren: Kirsynn Locke, Brooke Williams, Kash Stapleton; life-long companion, Samuel Fluker; eight siblings: Bobbie Simpson (Larry), Jeannett Terry, Wanda Cottrell, Delacy Patton (Andre), Luther Cottrell, Jr (Sheila), Marvin Cottrell (Kathy), Louis Cottrell (Kimberly), Clarence Cottrell (Vanessa); bonus sister: Gwen Turner (Rev. Terry Turner); special friends: Debbie Hensley, Susan Fields, and Sarah Robinson; her Mt. Olive Baptist Church family; a host of extended family members and many dear friends.
Visitation for Ms. Doris will be held Saturday, December 17, 2022, at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Harlan from 11:00am-1:00pm with her Celebration of Life service beginning at 1:00. Burial will follow at the Evarts Memorial Gardens with family members serving as pallbearers.
Harlan Funeral Home is honored to serve Ms. Doris Sweatt's family.
