Freda Gayle Smith, 78, of Evarts, passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital surrounded by her family and friends. She was born to the late Charles and Thelma Crider Osborne in Harlan County on October 30, 1947. She retired from Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital after 39 years of service. Freda was a faithful member of the New Beginnings Church of God at Coxton. She was very active in all church work. Freda loved her church family and friends.

In addition to her parents, Freda is preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Smith; sisters, Veronica Sue Mefford and husband, James; and Patsy Riggs and husband, Reverend Gary Riggs; and a niece, Shannon Osborne.

She leaves to cherish her memory a brother, Glen Osborne and wife, Terry; a sister, Debbie Kinney and husband, Reverend Jerry Kinney; nieces and nephews, Michael and Amy Mefford, Tanya and Troy Bradley, Joy and Ben Noe, Deanna and Andy Griffin, Stacie and Jonathan Ledford, Kristy and Tyler Reeder, Jeremy and Olivia Kinney, and a special niece and prayer partner, Bethany Kinney, an uncle Ralph Crider, and a host of other family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, from 11 am until 1 pm at the Evarts Funeral Home. A reading of her obituary by Reverend Jerry Kinney and John 14:1-4 by Mark Turner will close the visitation.

A Graveside service will be conducted at the Resthaven Cemetery at Keith, KY with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
