Obituary

Hazel Marie Hornsby Hyatt, age 87, of Mary Alice, Kentucky, went to her heavenly home on Friday, September 8, 2023, while at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Harlan County on May 5, 1936, to Paul and Maude Hornsby, Hazel was one of nine children. She was a life-long resident of Harlan County and married Vernon L. Hyatt. This blessed union brought forth seven beloved children.

Hazel was a member of the Gulston Church of God. She was a homemaker and a dedicated mother, first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as 'Mamaw' to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Hazel enjoyed her favorite hobbies of sewing, quilting and crocheting and was a devoted Kentucky Wildcat fan.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Hyatt; her parents, Paul and Maude Hornsby; one son, Dennis Hyatt; three brothers: Robert Monday, Elzo Hornsby and Walter Hornsby; and a special son-in-law, Tim Hawks.

Hazel leaves to cherish her memory her children: Vernon 'Mike" Hyatt, Terry Hyatt, Reba Hyatt, Linda Robinson, Angie Hawks; and Jeff (Tammy) Hyatt; eleven grandchildren: Jerusha "Terri" (Chris) Cox, Leslie (Scotty) Skidmore, Chasity Robinson (Brent Crowe), Jennifer (Alex) Stanton, Cammie Jones, Ashley (Carlos) Bautista, Kelly Hyatt, Alex (Emily) Hyatt, Ariel Hyatt, Mikey Hyatt; and Vernon Hyatt; and fifteen great-grandchildren: Makayla Cox, Aubree Cox, Brooklyn Cox, Bryan Skidmore, Emily Skidmore, Ava Grace Stanton, Grace Bautista, Savannah Bautista, Joseph Hyatt, Addison Hyatt, Dennis Hyatt, Vernon Hyatt, Dayton Carey, Kaden Carey; and Brilee Carly.

Also surviving are five siblings: Kate Hyatt, Eunice (Ron) Wade, Roger (Myrtle) Hornsby, Georgie (Frank) Carroll, Brian (Colleen) Hornsby; special friends, Frank Gibson, Rodney and Dealie Bargo; as well as a host of extended relatives and many dear friends.

Visitation for Hazel will be held Tuesday, September 12, 2023, from 5:00-7:00pm in the chapel of Harlan Funeral Home, with services beginning at 7:00. Reverend Ronnie Doyle and Reverend Nick Noe will officiate. A graveside service will take place Wednesday, September 13, at 10:00am at Resthaven Cemetery, Keith, KY, with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
