Jimmy Dale Garland Sr. of Dione, KY, passed away on October 29th, 2023 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at the age of 79. He was born on November 18th, 1943 to Charles Edgar Garland, Sr. and Georgia Lois Garland.

Jimmy was a 1961 graduate of Cumberland High School.  He attended Cumberland College and graduated with a bachelor's degree in music in 1968. He went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in Education from Union College in 1977.

He was a member of Putney Bible Church where he served as deacon, elder, Awana leader, and choir director.

Jimmy worked for the Harlan County Public Schools as a band director from 1968 until 2006. He instilled a love of music in many Harlan County students throughout his career.

Music was always a big part of Jimmy's life. The genre he loved most was English brass bands. His favorite rock band was Chicago and he loved to attend their concerts. His favorite trumpeter was Doc Severinson, whom he thought was the greatest of all time.  He passed his love of music on to his children and grandchildren.

Jimmy loved spending time at his camper on Norris Lake. He especially enjoyed spending time with his wife and family.

Jimmy is preceded in death by his father, Charles Edgar Garland, Sr. and mother, Georgia Lois Garland, and two brothers, Charles Edgar Garland Jr. and Donald Franklin Garland.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 51 years, the love of his life, Hannah Faye Carter Garland; his daughter, Rachel Forrester and husband, James, of Knoxville, TN and their children: Emily, Evan and Noah; his son, Jimmie Dale Garland, Jr. and wife, Lara, of Dione, KY and their children: Liam, Daelyn and Cian; nephews, Chuck, Craig, Chris, Randy and Russell Garland; special sister-in-law, Elizabeth Lloyd and husband Dorsel; special cousin, Delores Burdine; and a host of family and friends.

Pallbearers will be Jimmie Dale Garland Jr., Chris Garland, Russell Garland, Randy Garland, Liam Garland, James Forrester, Evan Forrester, and Dorsel Lloyd.  Honorary pallbearers are Chuck Garland, Noah Forrester, and Cian Garland.

Family and friends will be received at Putney Bible Church on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, from 6:00-8:00pm and Thursday November 2nd from 12:00-1:00pm. The funeral service will be held on Thursday November 2nd at 1:00pm with Jimmy's nephew, Craig Garland, officiating.  Eulogy by Pastor Britt Lawson.

Interment will take place at the Benham Cemetery in Benham, KY.
