Obituary

Jordan Coots, age eighty-eight, of Hiram, Kentucky, passed away on Monday, July 6, 2026, at the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital.

One of nine children born to Henry and Dora (Eldridge) Coots, Jordan was born in Perry County on June 18, 1938, but lived most of his life in Harlan County, running the streets of Cumberland and roaming his beloved Harlan County mountains as a youngster.

Jordan's first job was a "shoeshine boy". For just a few coins, he could turn dusty shoes into shining mirrors. From that humble beginning, Jordan learned the value of hard work. As a young man, for several years he worked as a furniture salesman at Cumberland Furniture. In 1970, he began working for U.S. Steel/Arch Mineral where he worked for thirty plus years in the maintenance department. If there was anything that needed fixing, Jordan was the person they called.

It was during those years that Jordan met and fell in love with Georgia Mae Cook. They quickly married and began their family. Their love spanned 56 wonderful years, and they were blessed with four children, whom they adored: Kim, Willard, Sean, and George. Jordan devoted his life to providing for his beloved family.

When the Arch Mineral Company closed their doors, Jordan retired and spent his time fishing and foraging the mountains he loved hunting ginseng, T-berry, huckleberry, etc. He and Georgia enjoyed sitting outdoors watching the birds and bears that frequented their yard, as well as watching Western movies, one of Jordan's favorite pastimes. When Georgia became sick, Jordan lived to care for her; anything she needed or wanted, Jordan made sure she had it. When she passed away in June of 2024, Jordan was devastated and never fully recovered from her absence. It would seem that Jordan died from a broken heart.

In addition to his parents, Henry and Dora Coots and his wife, Georgia, Jordan is preceded in death by seven of his siblings: Molly, Vera, Mary, Jackie, Johnny, Venon, and Virgil.

Those left to cherish his memory include his four children: Kim Goins of Cumberland, Willard Coots of Lexington, Sean (Melissa) Coots of Evarts, and George Coots of Tazewell, TN;  one brother, Boyd Coots, of Cumberland;  ten grandchildren: Cody, Seanna, Andrew, Amber, Tyler, Davian, Madelyn, Reed, Stephanie, Michelle; five great-grandchildren: Bryson, Western, Colter, Blaykley, Braxton; three special bonus daughters, Dr. April French; Jennifer Coots Mitler; Destiny Sage; a special bonus grandson, Dustin Jones; and a host of extended relatives; and many friends.

Jordan and Georgia's family would like to thank Dr. Van Breeding of Whitesburg ARH and the team of doctors and nurse practitioners who treated and supported their parents.

Visitation for Jordan will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026, at the Tri City Funeral Home from 5:00-7:00. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, July 11, at 1:00pm at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest beside his sweetheart in the Evarts Memorial Gardens, Evarts, KY.
