Kenneth Ray Hughes, 74, of Holmes Mill departed this life at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital on Monday, June 22, 2026. Born April 7, 1952 in Harlan County, he had lived here all of his life. Kenneth was a coal miner and enjoyed sitting on the porch and talking with his friends. Kenneth also enjoyed working on cars.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John Hughes and Arvilla Bush Hughes; and two brothers, E.J. and Norman Hughes.

Survivors include two children, Kenny Hughes, Highsplint; and Shannon (Tristan) Hayes, Closplint; a brother, Carl Hughes and wife Georgia, Verda; and four sisters, Martha Duff, Cotes; Betty Creech and husband, John, Aletty, VA; Barbara McKnight, Keokee; and Helen Creech and husband, Joe, Ashland, VA. Also surviving are three grandchildren, MacKenzie (Brad) Milwee, Brayden (Rebecca) Hayes and Gunner Hayes; a great-grandchild, Harper Hayes; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 until 8 pm at the Evarts Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, June 26, 2026, at 12 noon in the Chapel of the Evarts Funeral Home with the Reverend Ralph Whitaker officiating.

Burial will follow in the Bush Family Cemetery at Holmes Mill with his family and friends serving as pallbearers.
