Obituary

Thirty–four years is not long enough.

Kristen Brooke Halcomb Sexton, age thirty-four, formerly of Harlan, met her Savior on Thursday, December 15, 2022, while surrounded by her family, at her home in Georgetown, Kentucky.

Kristen was born in Harlan, Kentucky on September 7, 1988 to Betty Dean Halcomb and Arthur Earl Halcomb, Jr. Even at a young age, Kristen was very outgoing and had a big personality. She attended James A. Cawood High School and it was during her sophomore year, when she was fifteen years old, that she first began her battle with cancer. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. After receiving treatment of chemotherapy and radiation, the cancer went into remission. Doctors told Kristen, at that time, that she would never be able to have children. Cancer found her once again at the age of eighteen and her treatment consisted of chemotherapy and a stem-cell transplant. Once again, her cancer went into remission, this time for thirteen years. During those thirteen years, Kristen lived a wonderfully full life. She married (twice) and despite what the doctors had said, God blessed her with four beautiful children. At the age of thirty-one, the cancer returned, in her lungs this time. Kristen had a huge desire to live and she was a fighter. Cancer was not the winner in Kristen's life nor in her death. God poured out His grace upon her, time and time again. Grace and love won. Not cancer.

Kristen had a heart of gold. She was caring and gave so much of herself to others.  She was very adventurous, loved life and lived it to the fullest extent. Not one to dwell on her illness, she was always looking out for the well-being of others, even while in the hospital. Kristen was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She loved the Lord, and her faith was strong and carried her to the end of her life's journey. She wasn't afraid to die, for she knew what joys awaited her when she crossed the threshold of death and stepped into eternity with God.

For Kristen, family meant everything. Her children were her heart, her biggest joy, and her biggest regret for having to leave them. Her absence leaves a huge void in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love her.

Kristen is preceded in death by grandfathers: Harold Dean, Jr. and Arthur Halcomb, Sr; two cousins, Teresa Dean and Kevin Jewell; a great-aunt, Sylvia Dean; a great-grandmother, Mabel Ball; a great-grandfather, Verlan Ball; a great-uncle, Foy Ball; and a very special great-uncle, Larry Jones.

Left to cherish Kristen's memory is her husband, Adam Sexton; four children: Gabriel Swanner, Cassidy Swanner, Kashton Sexton, Ava Sexton; her parents, Betty and Art Halcomb; her brother, Jacob Halcomb and wife, Kelsey; a nephew, Isaac Halcomb; grandparents: Betty Sue Ball Dean and Danny and Anita Bowling; her dear friend, former husband, and father of her two oldest children, Corey Swanner; a special friend, Lauren Webb Bauer, who was more like a sister and was a constant figure in Kristen's life; her best friend, Ashley Hensley Jewell; a host of extended family members; and many dear friends.

According to Kristen's wishes, she was cremated and a Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, December 17, 2022 at 7:00pm at the Harlan Funeral Home. Friends and family may gather to pay their respects from 5:00-7:00. Dr. Roy Lucas will be officiating.
