Obituary

Leland M. Raleigh, 74, of Lexington, formerly of Cumberland, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2025, at the University of Kentucky Hospital following a short battle with cancer. He was born in Lynch, KY on November 23, 1950 to the late Henry Marvis and Vivian Fouts Raleigh. Leland was a 1968 graduate of Cumberland High School and was always proud to be a Harlan Countian. After high school, he attended the University of Kentucky where he received his bachelor's degree in History. After graduation he enlisted and proudly served in the United States Army. After his service in the Army, he shifted to civilian life where he worked at Sears of Lexington and then Toyota Motor Manufacturing in Georgetown until retirement. He was raised in the Cumberland First Christian Church. After moving to Lexington, he was a long-time member of the Porter Memorial Baptist Church and loved sharing his Christian faith with others. Leland was a devoted family man who dedicated his life to helping others in need. He found great joy being a foster parent to numerous children, making sure any child under his care was treated as his own. He was active in his local community, always offering a helping hand, making others laugh and he loved telling stories. In his free time, he enjoyed going to estate sales, thrift stores and yard sales, finding new treasures. He was an avid gardener and loved planting flowers. He saw the good in everything and everyone, and leaves behind an inspiring legacy of love, faith and family. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry Marvis and Vivian Fouts Raleigh and a brother, David M. Raleigh.

Leland leaves to mourn his passing his children, Tammy Raleigh (Eric Reid); April Curtis; and James Curtis, all of Lexington; a granddaughter, Juliet Alexander of Lexington; two brothers, Phillip Raleigh (Monica) of Missouri; Jonathan Raleigh (Tammy) of South Carolina; two sisters, Sharon Kennedy (David) of Cumberland; Sheliah Raleigh of Cumberland; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
