Obituary

Mr. Major Irvine Turner, also known as Mickey, age fifty-nine, of Cumberland, Kentucky, passed away peacefully after a short but difficult battle with cancer on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at the Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Center in Hazard, KY.

Mickey was born on December 26, 1963 in Benham, KY to Johnny and Ethel (Eldridge) Turner. He joined siblings: Linda Sue, Rose Marie, Judy Ann, Cindy Lou, Kenneth, Richard, and David. He was a lifelong resident of the TriCity area. Mickey didn't graduate from high school but he obtained his GED and went on to take courses at Southeast Community College at the Cumberland campus. He began working at the age of 14 when he took a job as a night watchman/security guard at a local company. He worked the remainder of his life until his cancer prevented him from doing so. His favorite job was working as an assistant manager at Food World. His easy-going, friendly personality made that a perfect job for him and he thoroughly enjoyed his position.

Mickey's first wife, Lydia Sue, passed away in 2009, leaving Mickey with an eight year old son, Johnny Lee, to raise alone. Years later, Mickey met Betty Minix online and the two spent years getting to know one another. On June 10, 2014, Mickey and Betty were married. That union gave Mickey three additional children to love…Betty's three children: Harrison, Silas, and Samantha.

Mickey had a wonderful, bubbly personality.  He was easy to talk to, quick with a joke and a laugh, and thought everything was funny. He enjoyed going for walks, mowing his grass, watching horror movies, and drinking lots of coffee. Another pastime he was passionate about was yard sales. He and Betty would spend hours driving around looking for second-hand treasures at yard sales. He would then turn around and sell those treasures at the Bid Site in Cumberland every week. Mickey believed in the Pentecostal faith and attended Tri City Pentecostal Church in Cumberland.

Mickey is preceded in death by his parents, Johnny and Ethel Turner; a sister, Linda Sue Turner; a brother, David Turner; and his first wife, Lydia Sue Cross Turner.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Betty Turner, of Cumberland; four children: Johnny Lee Turner of Cumberland, Harrison Saylor of Cumberland, Silas Saylor, Jr. of Pennsylvania, Samantha Saylor of Big Stone, VA; three sisters: Rose Marie Lewis, Judy Ann Sizemore, Cindy Lou Turner; two brothers: Kenneth and Richard Turner; two grandchildren: Colton and Levi Saylor; a host of extended relatives and many dear friends.

Visitation for Mickey will be held Friday, June 9, 2023, from 6:00-8:00pm at the Tri City Funeral Home in Benham, KY. The funeral will be Saturday, June 10 at 11:00am with Brother Billy Lewis officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at the D.L. Creech Cemetery in Cumberland, KY.
