Retha Joyce "Dot" Short, 82, of Closplint departed this life on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at her home. Born October 12, 1941, she had lived here most of her life. Dot was a former Postmistress for the U.S. Postal Service where she managed the Holmes Mill Post Office for several years. She was a member of the River Ridge Missionary Baptist Church and loved sewing, crocheting and working puzzles.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Murph Short; her parents, Ruth Harris Short and Worley Short; a daughter, Rebeccah "Becky" Short Holman; and a sister, Dorthy Price.

Survivors include five children, Kathy Short, Big Stone Gap, VA; Jeff Short, Keokee, VA; Donna Deweese and husband, Harry, Dayhoit, KY; Cheyenne Short and wife, Barb, Closplint, KY; and Scottie Short and wife Roslyn, Wise, VA. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Farrahan Short; Shawna Henery and husband, Tim; Alexis Simpson and husband, Kevin; Lance Short and wife, Taylor; Stephanie Irvin and husband, Tyler; and Tracy Shworles and husband, Greg; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren,other family and friends, including a special cousin, Viola Wynn.

Visitation will be held Saturday from 5 until 8 pm at the Evarts Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, July 14, 2024, at 1:30 PM in the Chapel of the Evarts Funeral Home with the Reverend Ralph Whitaker officiating.

Interment will be in the Evarts Memorial Gardens at a later date.
