Sylvia Edna Sergent Short, 83, of Shorttown, departed this life on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at the Harlan Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born April 4, 1942 in Harlan County, she had lived here most of her life. Sylvia was a sales clerk for Fuller's Department Store and Mack's Super Market. She loved being outdoors and going to church before her health declined. Sylvia was a member of the Evarts Holiness Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond "Ray" Short, Sr.; her parents, Nellie Lankford Sergent and William Sergent; four sisters, Evelyn Sergent, Jacquline Blackwell, Sudie McNew and an infant sister, Wilma Jean Sergent; two brothers, A.B. Sergent and June Sergent; and her best friend, Gerri Haynes.

Survivors include three children, Jerry Short and wife, Treva, Cotes; Shirley Browning and husband, Arthur, Nolansburg; and Raymond "Ray" Short, Jr., and wife, Gina, Rogersville, TN; a brother, Shelby Sergent, North Carolina; a sister, Shirley Tramel, Harlan; five grandchildren, Robbie (Sue) Short, Gerald (Christina) Browning, Taylor (Autry) Cheatham, Callie (Carrie) Anderson and Rachel (Jake) Mills; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends including a special furry friends, Omie.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5 until 8 PM at the Evarts Funeral Home and Wednesday after 1 pm at the Evarts Holiness Church at Bailey's Creek.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at 2 PM at the Evarts Holiness Church at Bailey's Creek with the Reverend Mike Guthrie and Reverend Perry Long officiating.

Following the services her burial will be in the Evarts Memorial Gardens with her grandsons serving as pallbearers.
